Château d'Agassac 2005

Château d’Agassac, the chateau’s first wine, is made from the estate’s oldest vines and best deep gravel terroirs. It is the archetype of the modern Médoc, structured and powerful whilst also well-balanced and fruity, displaying tannins with no aggressive astringency. Made for cellaring, it will also delight lovers of middle-aged wines seeking fruit, substance and balance. It is one of the most highly regarded and award-winning wines in the Haut-Médoc region. |
This expression of Agassac 2005 is primarily dominated by powerful spicy aromas over a still very generous base. The tannic harmony between acidity and oak is currently perfect.
blend : 53,5 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 1,5% Cabernet Franc.
Best served at : 16°
Decanting : 2 hours
Matching with food : Braised beef, a reduced Agassac sauce and crispy potatoes
2005 was heralded as from the spring, confirmed by the summer and definitely confirmed by the autumn harvest as outstanding. The early drought could have been harmful but the cool August nights and the gentle September rain magnificently rounded out this vintage which, for Agassac and its Aquitaine brothers and cousins, will without doubt stand as a benchmark in terms of concentration.
To the eye : Beautiful red appearance with hints of garnet, displaying brightness and radiance
On the nose : The powerful nose explodes into ripe red fruit notes blended with hints of blackcurrant, blueberry and wild blackberry supported by smoky aromas.
After airing : In the glass, the wine proves powerful and concentrated with jammy notes of cherries in brandy and roasted touches. After a little oxygenation, toasted hazelnuts and almonds are delicately revealed to harmoniously shape the wine over a dark chocolate base.
On the palate : Gently fruity and smooth on the palate, unveiling wonderfully rich tannins thanks to the rich vintage and the quality of the wine's aging. A long finish with a spicy, almost Rhone-esque texture revealing hints of pepper and bay, ending with complex aromatic touches of red stone fruits and prune. The whole is supported by a dense yet silky tannic structure.
